SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3

(By Senators Lucht and Holliday)

Commemorating the life and work of Florette Angel.

Whereas, Florette Angel, a tireless advocate for the children of this state, died Tuesday, August 3, 1993, after a long struggle with cancer; and
Whereas, She was devoted to improving the living conditions of those at the dawn of life, including children, troubled youth, wards of the state in foster care and juveniles caught up in the criminal justice system; and
Whereas, She worked tirelessly, lobbying for government reforms in the way it responds to the needs of those in the shadows of life, including the poor and disadvantaged of our society; and
Whereas, In the twilight of her life, she insisted on carrying out a spirited campaign for children's rights and humane care despite battling a debilitating disease; and
Whereas, She had well-defined objectives and she used her research to draw attention to those in need who would otherwise go without a champion; and
Whereas, She is credited with creating the River School in Charleston and the Mountain Artisans cooperative for craft artists; and
Whereas, She organized the West Virginia Youth Coalition which became the Children's Policy Institute; and
Whereas, She raised our consciousness and created a sense of community for issues that affected diverse groups; and
Whereas, She would not be impressed that this Senate would memorialize her good deeds and list her accomplishments unless it also cared about those issues for which she fought so hard; and
Whereas, It is not so much the deeds or the works as it is the life she lived and the sacrifices she made for the benefit of her community and state and the model of citizenship she represents for all of us; and
Whereas, She would want this Senate and the citizens of this state to help continue her work by remembering the Florette Angel Fund which has been established to help continue her mission and assist the Children's Policy Institute; and
Whereas, Contributions may be made to the Children's Policy Institute, 1205 Quarrier Street, Lower Level, Charleston, West Virginia 25301; and
Whereas, Florette Angel was also a person of good humor and grace; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate commemorates the life and work of Florette Angel; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the family of Florette Angel.
